Capital Allocation

What is Stock-based Compensation?

The value of shares and options granted to employees. It is a real cost paid in ownership rather than cash, so it dilutes existing holders.

How it is calculated

Share-based compensation expense added back on the cash flow statement.

How to read it

Compare it with revenue and with buybacks. Buybacks that only offset stock compensation are not returning cash to shareholders.

Where the numbers come from

Scrutar computes Stock-based Compensation from the figures each company reports to the SEC in its annual and quarterly filings, using the XBRL data attached to those filings.
